SMU Swim Run Sprint

The return of physical races saw the inaugural SMU Swim Run Sprint event take place at Palawan Beach on Sentosa Island. This year’s event was sanctioned by the Triathlon Association of Singapore and the short and fast race format (400m Swim, 2.5km) run was used as a selection data point to talent identify potential athletes that could represent Singapore for the 2023 SEA (South-East Asian) Games team in Cambodia which will see all three multisport events - Aquathlon, Duathlon and Triathlon - take place for the individual events and a relay format for the Aquathlon.

The athletes arrived early in the morning for their warm-up and quickly got staggered into four waves that saw about 15 ~ 25 athletes in each start. Swim entry was a clean beach start with a long run in due to the low tides that guaranteed the full washing machine experience, and a simple out and back course with one turn buoy that didn’t require much sighting (unless you’re a known drifter). The athletes were quickly strung out as the stronger swimmers quickly made their moves to take the lead and it was really up to who had the better legs on the fast and flat run that didn’t allow much of a runway for easing into the red zone.

A job well done to the TRIBAL youth development team for putting up a good fight amidst some of the best on our tiny island!
